Shafman was known for booking Red Skelton and Burl Ives into Carnegie Hall in the ’70s and brought many shows into the city’s 365-seat Bijou before it was torn down in the ’80s, but his biggest discovery was Mummenschanz Troupe, the peculiar mime act from Switzerland.
The toilet roll-loving act presented more than 1,320 performances at the Bijou, making it one of the longest runs on Broadway, according to the New York Times.
His latest roster included acts like Stacy Sullivan, KT Sullivan, Mark Nadler and Karen Akers.
