Pitfalls Of Working In The Biz

Entertainment Assist, set up to help entertainment industry folk who have fallen on hard times, is conducting research into the financial and health pitfalls of working in the industry.

The group is particularly alarmed by the high rate of suicide. Its chair, Wal Bishop, stated, “There is an enormous difference between public perception and the reality of the health and financial circumstances of many working within the industry. Spasmodic employment and irregular income takes its toll.”

The study, “Working In The Australian Entertainment Industry: Key Factors In Longevity And Transition,” partners with the College of Arts at Victoria University in Melbourne. It will focus on musicians, dancers, actors, comedians, circus performers, directors, producers, technicians and backstage workers.

The study will be conducted in three parts – face-to-face interviews, an online survey, and strategies to counter the problems.
