HARD Summer Death

Police in El Monte, Calif., are investigating the death of a female concertgoer who attended HARD Summer 2014 at the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area Aug. 3.

Emily Tran was pronounced dead at a South El Monte hospital the next morning, Los Angeles County coroner’s office spokesman Ed Winter told the Los Angeles Times.

The cause of death is still under investigation, but police are looking into whether drugs were involved and if Tran was “given something on purpose or willingly,” Winter added.

This was the first time HARD, which features EDM and hip hop, was held at Whittier Narrows. The park is managed by the county’s department of parks and recreation.

In a statement to the paper, the parks department noted safety is always a top concern, and “for this event, we worked closely with the concert promoter, law enforcement, emergency medical personnel and security to make sure there is a swift response to any medical emergency.”

Police made 140 arrests during the festival, 20 of which were drug-related, LA Weekly reported.
