Anchorage Arena To Debut

The $110 million, 192,000-square-foot Alaska Airlines Center at the University of Alaska Anchorage will debut in September with a volleyball tournament, but it’s also expected to provide the state’s largest city with a new concert venue.

The 5,000-seat arena could provide an alternate to Sullivan Arena as the venue of choice for many concerts, starting with an Alabama Shakes gig Sept. 13.

The Great Alaska Shootout men’s NCAA basketball tournament will be played this year at the Alaska Airlines Center instead of Sullivan, and basketball, volleyball and the gymnastics teams will call the arena home.

But there will also be at least 10-12 non-sports events annually, including concerts, and food options will be taken up a notch. The arena will have its own Varsity Sports Grille, featuring beer and wine, and food like artisan pizzas. The restaurant will be open seven days a week, and officials hope it becomes a destination of its own.

The grand opening weekend will be Sept. 5.
