Bruce Hornsby Goes Solo

Bruce Hornsby announces a string of solo dates beginning next month in South Carolina and continuing in 2015.  Coming up a bit sooner is the release of his new live album, “Solo Concerts,” his first on Vanguard.

Available Aug. 25, Hornsby’s new two-disc LP delivers what the title promises – tracks culled from various solo performances.  Of course, you get his signature tunes such as “Mandolin Rain” and “The Valley Road” but Hornsby also gives you a glimpse of his pre-fame life by including a few old-timey numbers from back in the day when he played accordion alongside fiddlers, banjoists and dulcimer players.  Plus, Hornsby ventures into the world of American modernists such as Elliot Carter and others.

“I think I’ve found a middle ground where you’re reaching and broadening your language but still connecting with someone perhaps used to hearing – for an entire lifetime – only those seven white notes and those simple chords,” Hornsby said.

Hornsby’s fall adventure isn’t 100 percent solo.  He will appear with drummer Sonny Emory as the Bruce Hornsby Duo in Princeton, N.J., at McCarter Theatre Center Sept. 27 and with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder at the “Wide Open Bluegrass Festival” in Raleigh, N.C., at Red Hat Amphitheatre Oct. 4.
