American Authors

Although “Best Day Of My Life” is the name of the platinum single that launched American Authors’ career, the band’s best days are still ahead as the indie rock act continues to grow.

Before the tune climbed radio charts in North America, Europe and Australia, American Authors had the support of SiriusXM’s Alt Nation program director Jeff Regan, who introduced the world to the band’s debut single, “Believer.”

“When the band started to emerge, they weren’t on a label,” Dirty Canvas Music’s Shep Goodman, who started working with the band as a co-writer/producer, told Pollstar. “We were trying to develop the band by utilizing the resources that were available to us as an independent company … trying to get the attention of the tastemakers. So that’s what happened with Jeff Regan. That led to getting awareness out about the band.”

Soon enough “Best Day Of My Life” was everywhere from high-profile TV commercials to the trailer for “Delivery Man” to being sung on “Glee.” To capitalize on the success of the singles, American Authors quickly released its self-titled EP last summer, which was followed by its debut LP in March.

7S Management’s Mike Polans talked to Pollstar about the importance of balancing the promotion of “Best Day Of My Life” with developing the band’s touring career from the ground up.

“Last fall they played tiny 300-cap clubs and they’ve been doing a lot of international touring and radio dates,” Polans said. “We built them up to doing a spring tour with clubs a little bit bigger and then they went out with OneRepublic and The Script this summer doing a massive support tour in amphitheatres and now we’re going back out in the fall [on] the Honda Civic tour, headlining medium-sized 1,000- to 2,000-cap clubs.

“We’re seeing a progressive increase in ticket sales and really building their hard ticket value over the last year.”

Polans noted that the band held off on playing many U.S. festivals because the events book so far in advance.

“Moving into next year we’re going to be in a better position to get better slots at festivals so it made sense to wait for a lot of the big ones.”
