Orpheum Renovations Underway

The 96-year-old theater was purchased by two local men for $2 million in May and a firm owned by one of the men, Fountainbleau Construction, is leading a $13 million restoration of the building.
Though flooding during Katrina submerged the Orpheum’s basement as well as parts of the lobby and ground-floor seats, the rest of the building apparently wasn’t so badly damaged.
Structurally, the Orpheum is fine, officials on the project have said, noting that while decorative plaster and terra cotta elements inside the venue will need to be restored, the building’s roof was replaced by previous owners and the exterior is in good shape.
Plans for the renovation include converting space under the balcony into a new bar area, replacing old ice pit air conditioning with a modern system, building a new stage and adjustable floor, leveling the basement off for office space and restoring decorative details.
The venue is also expected to receive a new marquee and signage at some point, after owners consult with the Historic District Landmarks Commission. Renovations on the venue are expected to continue for another six months.
