Lorde Continues Awards Triumph

Lorde and producer Joel Little took out two more wins in New Zealand. 

At the Silver Scrolls awards Oct. 30 at Wellington’s , their song “Team” was named most performed New Zealand work in New Zealand, while “Royals” won most performed New Zealand work internationally.

Organised for the 49th year by the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA), the Silver Scrolls acknowledge excellence in songwriting. Lorde, who won last year’s Silver Scroll for song of the year, was there to present the trophy to this year’s winner, Canadian-born country singer Tami Neilson. Co-written with brother Joshua Neilson, “Walk (Back To Your Arms)” was voted 2014’s best local song by APRA’s 10,000 New Zealand songwriter and composer members.

“I’m totally blown away, it felt like a surreal dream to walk up and Lorde gives you an award,” said the singer who moved to New Zealand 2005.

She won the New Zealand Music Award for best country album three times. In Silver Scrolls tradition, all nominated songs were performed with a total reinterpretation, this year under the musical direction of

The Neilsons’ soul blues ballad was turned into a world-pop version by a 16-piece Indonesian Gamelan bell orchestra, with a growling vocal by trio The All Seeing Hand’s Jonny Marks.

Classical and electronic music pioneer Douglas Lilburn was inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame by composer and author Philip Norman.

Three of Lilburn’s works were performed individually by synthesizer maestro Ed Zuccollo, pianist Jian Liu and avant-garde outfit The Labcoats.
