Lucky No. 13 For Billy Joel

When Billy Joel announced his franchise at Madison Square Garden last year, the singer said he’d be playing a show a month at the famed New York venue as long as there is demand. Well, it looks like the Big Apple can’t get enough because he’s announced his 13th consecutive MSG gig.

Thanks to his 2006 run at The Garden, the Piano Man had already earned bragging rights as the first solo artist to sell out 12 consecutive shows at the arena. Now his Jan. 9 concert will break his own record of the “longest run of any artist” at MSG.

When he launched the residency this past January, Joel told the audience, “I have no idea how long this is going to go. 2014 is my 50th year in show business. What was I thinking?”

The Jan. 9 show will mark Joel’s 59th overall performance at the venue. Soon he’ll catch up to the record for “most number of performances by an artist” – 64. That title is held by Joel’s buddy, Elton John.

A Citi cardmember presale for the Jan. 9 show begins Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. EST. The general onsale is Nov. 14 at 10 a.m. EST.

For those of us who haven’t made it to New York to see Joel, you’ll want to check out the premiere of “Billy Joel Home at the Garden,” which airs on the MSG Network Nov. 10 at 11 p.m., immediately following the Knicks home game against the Atlanta Hawks. It will also air Nov. 11 at 10:3 p.m. The 30-minute special features behind-the-scene footage of the musician’s MSG residency along with interview with band members and road crew.
