College Gets Arena Gift

Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C., is getting a new arena thanks to the generosity of a notable alumnus, Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, for whom the 3,400-seat building will be named.

Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium will begin construction next year and is expected to be completed in time for the 2017-18 school year.

Wofford College Wofford athletics director Richard Johnson told the Herald-Journal he didn’t know how much the arena will cost, but it’s a gift from Richardson – who will foot the tab for its construction.

“All I know is that it will be an absolutely first-rate facility,” Johnson told the paper. “You reach a time in your life when you have to decide what to do with your assets,” Richardson said of the gift. “I chose to direct a significant part of mine to Wofford.”
