Izod Center To Close?

The state-owned Izod Center – former home to the New Jersey Devils and Nets – in East Rutherford, N.J., was expected to close at press time.

The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which oversees the Meadowlands complex which includes the Izod Center, reached a deal with the Prudential Center in Newark, which is 10 miles away, and Prudential has been granted the right to host Izod’s events calendar, according to the Star Ledger.

The two-year agreement has all future Izod events moved to the Prudential beginning Jan. 31, including shows by Chris Brown and Maroon 5, according to the paper. The 34-year-old Izod Center has been reportedly struggling with the growing competition in the marketplace.

State Sen. Paul Sarlo (D-Bergen) criticized the administration of Republican state governor Chris Christie for closing the arena without taking bids from companies that could take over operations of the facility. All 18 members of the Sports Authority board were appointed by Christie. Sarlo said he was unsure what will happen to the 20,000-capacity building.
