Kaaboo Fest To Debut

The void left in San Diego’s entertainment offerings with the demise of the annual Street Scene festival in 2009 is about to be filled with a new event offering a different approach.

Kaaboo Del Mar, scheduled Sept. 18-20 at the Del Mar Racetrack and Fairgrounds, will offer high-quality food, wine and craft beer offerings, a comedy stage and amenities for fans who prefer comfort to roughing it at a festival.

The event will also feature international artists among its 100 acts on seven stages Kaaboo principal Bryan Gordon told the city’s Union-Tribune he and his partners hope to attract those who previously attended Street Scene.

The home-grown event reportedly attracted up to 100,000 fans at its best in 2003 but dwindling attendance and financial problems put an end to it.

“The San Diego community seems to miss Street Scene in a lot of ways, and there is a void in what is a vibrant, very active metropolitan area,” Gordon told the paper. “So, from our vantage point, while it’s obviously too bad for the city and the producers of Street Scene that it fell by the wayside, it’s encouraging for us that there is an appetite for such an event in San Diego. … And hopefully, we can take that legacy and build on it.”

Kaaboo Del Mar’s lineup will be announced and tickets will go on sale at kaabooexperience.com Feb. 23. Fans can choose from single-and multi-day passes as well as hotel packages and shuttle service. Prices are in the process of being finalized, according to the Union-Tribune.

“Regardless of whether you have a general admission pass or VIP pass, our goal is to have the basic ‘Boo’ experience be quite elevated, compared to the norms within the music festival industry,” Gordon said.
