Becky G
By the time she was 11, she was putting those rhymes together with beats in GarageBand and sharing them with her friends – and the world. The world, including producers The Jam and Dr. Luke, noticed.
Becky G is all of 17 now, preparing to drop her first full-length album with help from Dr. Luke, who signed her to his Kemosabe label. CAA’s Brian Manning handles agenting duties, and Rebel One Entertainment’s team handles management. But in many way, Becky G has been charge of her future from the time she shared a converted garage with her family.
The video from her breakout track, “Becky From The Block,” – an homage to her Mexican heritage and Inglewood, including a cameo from Jennifer Lopez – has been watched more than 23 million times on YouTube and she’s already toured with Austin Mahone, Demi Lovato, Jason Derulo and Katy Perry.
Becky G isn’t easy to pigeonhole. She describes her music as “urban pop with a bit of Latin spice.” She can sing and rap, appeals to a Latin audience as well as having a foot firmly planted in pop, and has no less than pop princess Perry taking her on bowling dates during her “Prismatic” tour last fall.
She also seems determined to avoid pitfalls that have challenged a legion of teen pop stars, and cites Hillary Duff as a role model to emulate in the transition from tween to grown-up star.
She most recently made the rounds of holiday radio festivals, performed on NBC’s “Today” show and the Teen Choice Awards, among other high-profile appearances and looks poised to break out in a big way in 2015.
Becky G has a formidable portfolio of her own songs to tour with. In addition to “Becky From The Block,” she has a hit single, “Shower,” with more than 900,000 units sold and 45 million YouTube views, according to RCA, and a No. 1 Latin single with “Can’t Get Enough” featuring Pitbull, from her debut EP Play It Again.
