Death Cab For Cutie Drives Into The Sun

Armed with a new batch of songs and a new touring lineup, Death Cab For Cutie is ready to play some shows. The indie rock band has announced the first leg of a North American tour in support of their upcoming eighth studio album.

Following the departure of original member Chris Walla last summer, the act has added Dave Depper (Menomena, Fruit Bats, Corin Tucker, Ray Lamontagne) and Zac Rae (My Brightest Diamond, Fiona Apple, Lana Del Rey, Gnarls Barkley) to the touring roster. Both musicians will contribute additional guitars and keyboards. The lineup also features singer/guitarist Ben Gibbard, bassist Nick Harmer and drummer Jason McGerr.

Last week the band took the stage for a hometown show in Seattle at The Crocodile Café, marking Death Cab’s first show since Walla called it quits.

“The onstage chemistry between original members singer/guitarist Gibbard, bassist Nick Harmer, drummer Jason McGerr, and the new players was surprisingly heartfelt; the vibe felt as if they had been jamming together for years, and it showed in how beautifully they riffed off of each other during the set’s numerous instrumental solos,” Seattle Weekly wrote in its review.

Preorders begin this week for the new LP, Kintsugi, which is due out March 31. The album’s title is named after the Japanese art of using precious metals like gold, silver and platinum to repair cracks in ceramics. The philosophy values the damage and the history of an object rather than trying to cover up imperfections.

Fans who pre-order the album will get an instant download of “Black Sun.” The band premiered the official lyric video for the single today. Tune in to the “Late Show with David Letterman” Thursday to see the band perform “Black Sun.” You can also catch Death Cab on “The Late Late Show” on Friday.
