Sacramento Arena Reimagined

The Sacramento Kings, which are planning to move into a new facility, are working on a plan to redevelop the team’s current home, , but city leaders are getting impatient.

A new ownership group took over the NBA team and the arena two years ago. The team has played in the suburb of North Natomas in what was known as Arco Arena since 1985, but are planning to move to a new $477 million arena in downtown Sacramento this fall.

Meanwhile, a Kings executive told Natomas’ city council that the team plans to find a use for about 200 acres surrounding Sleep Train Arena, according to the Sacramento Bee.

The team owns 84 acres in North Natomas and will receive 100 city-owned acres by next year as part of the city’s $255 million contribution to the downtown arena financing plan, the paper said.

“I don’t want to wait until 2016 and the team is gone and that engine is gone for Natomas before we have a plan for how we’re moving forward,” Councilwoman Angelique Ashby said. “That is unacceptable.” Ideas for the arena include repurposing it as a tech/corporate center, hospital, higher education site or mixed-use development, according to the Sacramento Business Journal.
