Changes: Waka Flocka Flame, Sting, Nickelback

Waka Flocka Flame nixes an appearance in Oklahoma after the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity’s now-infamous racist video surfaced over the weekend … A case of the flu causes Paul Simon and Sting to call off a few nights of their co-headline tour … Nickelback postpones a few more gigs.

Not only has the University of Oklahoma cut ties with the school’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, but the fraternity can forget about next month’s Waka Flocka Flame show. The rapper announced the performance was canceled in a post saying he was “disgusted and disappointed in the actions of the SAE fraternity.”

A video was posted online Sunday showing members of the university’s chapter of SAE participating in a racist chant that declared that blacks could never join the frat. The chant referenced lynching and the N-word.

“When I first started doing shows it was all hood spots and all black people,” Waka Flocka posted on Instagram. “Then I had some mainstream success and did some EDM and it was all white people at my shows for a while. Now it’s white, black and brown people at my shows. All races partying having a good time and enjoying themselves together peacefully. That’s what Waka Flocka is all about. For that reason I must say I’m disgusted and disappointed in the actions of the SAE fraternity at University of Oklahoma and I will be canceling my scheduled performance for them next month. Racism is something I will not tolerate.”

The rapper’s Instagram included a caption that added, “I know for a fact the whole school and SAE don’t agree with those kids actions so know that I’m not mad at the whole #SAE just those disgusting kids !!!!!! #WFF We can’t change history but we damn sure can create our own future #DeathToRacism”

The national chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon announced it is closing the Norman, Okla., chapter, effective immediately. A statement from the group said, “We apologize for the unacceptable and racist behavior of the individuals in the video, and we are disgusted that any member would act in such a way. Furthermore, we are embarrassed by this video and offer our empathy not only to anyone outside the organization who is offended but also to our brothers who come from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities.”

University of Oklahoma President David Boren said SAE members have until midnight Tuesday to move out of the frat house, according to the Associated Press.

Sting is the guy who’s ailing. In addition to postponing this weekend’s Sting/Paul Simon co-bill dates in Europe, Sting has also canceled Monday’s appearance at Cherrytree Record’s 10th anniversary concert at New York’s Webster Hall. A post on his Facebook page says, “Sting regrets that he can’t perform at the star-studded celebration but will absolutely be there in spirit.”

Following doctor’s orders, Sting is resting at home in New York City. He was diagnosed with the flu and a high fever.

The European shows were supposed to take place March 13 in Krakow, Poland, and March 14 in Prague, Czech Republic. Fans are advised to hold onto their tickets while we wait for the rescheduled gigs to be announced. The next stop on the co-headline tour is March 16 in Berlin.  Visit Sting.com and SimonAndStingTour.com for more information.

After postponing a few dates last week because of a “family emergency,” Nickelback has now pushed back shows in North Charleston, S.C., and Jacksonville, Fla.

This time around, the band is blaming a scheduling conflict. A gig originally scheduled March 24 at the North Charleston Coliseum in South Carolina will now take place Aug. 31. The March 25 show at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in Florida has been postponed to Sept. 1. Tickets purchased for the original shows will be honored at the new dates.
