Radio Host Billy Block Dies
Billy Block, 59, whose weekly radio showcases helped bring recognition to artists from Jim Lauderdale and Lucinda Williams to Miranda Lambert and Florida Georgia Line, died March 11 following a battle with metastatic melanoma.
Block got his start playing drums as a kid and toured with the likes of Billy Joe Shaver, Willie Nelson, and Emmylou Harris.
He played in the house band for “The Ronnie Mack Barn Dance” at the Palomino club in Los Angeles before moving to Nashville, where he started a weekly showcase of his own that focused on alt-country and became one of the city’s longest-running live radio shows.
