Al Bunetta Dies

Al Bunetta, who managed John Prine for more than 30 years, died March 22 in Nashville after a brief battle with cancer.

He was recently diagnosed with cancer and admitted to a local hospital March 12. In addition to guiding Prine’s career, Bunetta also managed the late songwriter Steve Goodman throughout his career.

In addition to Al Bunetta Management, he founded Prine’s label, Oh Boy Records, and Goodman’s Red Pajamas Records as well as Blue Plate Music, which specializes in compilations and “The Best of Mountain Stage” series.

Bunetta won Grammys for co-producing A Tribute To Steve Goodman and Prine’s 2006 album, Fair & Square.

He was also active in organizations including NARAS and Country Music Association. Bunetta is survived by his wife, Dawn, and was preceded in death by his son Juri and mother, Mary.

Final arrangements for Bunetta are pending but expected to be announced in the coming days, according to a statement.

“His wife Dawn and the rest of the Bunetta family appreciates your well-wishes during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juri Bunetta Friendship Foundation.”
