New York Festival Skips 2015

The Belleayre Music Festival in Highmont, N.Y., will not return this summer after a 23-year run because of a lack of funding, according to organizers, but is expected to have a 2016 run.

The event, promoted by the Belleayre Conservatory and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, last year ran July 5 to Aug. 30 with acts like Buddy GuySouthside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, and The Hold Steady.

The event, which has been held each summer at the Belleayre Ski Center in Shandaken and has hosted everyone from Ray Charles to Vince Gill, is running out of cash.

The decision comes after a recent split between the conservatory and the new operator of the ski center, according to the Daily Freeman newspaper.

The conservatory cited production expenses and rising artist costs as two factors in its decision. Festival Executive Director Mel Litoff said he hopes to have a 1,200-capacity amphitheatre for future events rather than the tent where the event has been traditionally been held.
