Black Hours was released last June on Ribbon Music, featuring collaborations with his fellow Walkmen bandmate Paul Maroon, as well as Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij, Dirty Projectors’ Amber Coffman, The Shins’ Richard Swift, and Fleet Foxes’ Morgan Henderson.

Newsweek included Black Hours in its list of “The Top 10 Albums of 2014,” describing the LP as “an eclectic offering that abandons the Walkmen-y angst of old to wade into boozy crooner territory.” The publication praises the collaborations, saying that “the results are uniformly excellent, spanning the gamut from ramshackle, weary-eyed country (‘I Retired’) to a floor-rattling acoustic anthem (‘Alexandra’) that ought to make Paul Simon jealous.”

In its review, the A.V. Club writes, “In the hands of a less capable frontman and songwriter, Black Hours could have turned out as a cheesy attempt at ’50s pastiche. Instead, it’s a lively, confident, and charming first effort.”
