Babymetal Comes To North America

Japan’s Babymetal lands on the continent in May for gigs in Mexico, Canada and the U.S. before departing for Europe.  Destinations include Mexico City, Chicago, Toronto and Columbus, Ohio.

Made up of three female musicians the band is described as a “mix of J-Pop Idol and heavy metal.”  Babymetal recently signed with RAL/Sony Music Entertainment, which will shepherd the U.S. release of the band’s self-titled debut album.  You’ll be able to buy it digitally May 12 and in physical form June 16.  The album contains two bonus tracks.

“After witnessing the band’s sold-out New York show, we knew we wanted to be involved,” said Bill Richards, VP of marketing at RAL/Sony Music Entertainment.  “The core metal fans and metal press seem to get Babymetal, which shows how the language of music transcends boundaries.  They hit all the entertainment buttons and are really fun to watch.”

17-year-old Su-Metal (vocal, dance) and 15-year-olds Yuimetal (scream, dance) and Moametal (scream, dance) – backed by a four-piece group – have scored big on Japan’s music charts. Babymetal’s “IJime, Dame, Zetta!” and “Megistune” were ranked in the Top 10 Oricon chart while the album hit No. 1 on Japan’s album chart.

Here’s a taste of Babymetal in the form of a live rendition of “Gimme Chocolate!!”
