SF Arena Again Under Fire

A proposed 18,000-seat arena on San Francisco’s waterfront is once again running into opposition, this time from a group of well-heeled supporters of the nearby University of California hospital that includes a politically powerful cast of consultants.

The Golden State Warriors hope to play future seasons in a new 18,000-seat arena in San Francisco, shown here in the latest artist rendering.

The NBA’s Golden State Warriors want to build the arena and have already moved its location and design plans to appease neighbors. But now, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, an “anonymous group of what organizers describe as big-bucks donors” have hired consultants including UCSF Senior Vice Chancellor Bruce Spaulding and, briefly, former SF Mayor Willie Brown to block plans for the venue and adjacent office towers.

Another consultant, Jack Davis, is a semi-retired but powerful San Francisco political adviser.

“This arena is going to essentially ruin decades of good work and planning in Mission Bay and make it impossible for people to access the hospital there,” Sam Singer, a spokesmen for the group, told the Chronicle.

The latest challenge to the Warriors’ arena plan comes just one month before final environmental impact reports are to be released. The Chronicle speculates the new effort is aimed at forcing the team to scale back its plan to develop 12 acres next to UCSF.
