A week before he was set to play Japan for the second time this year, Grammy-winning British singer Sam Smith canceled the gigs.

Smith had already pulled out of scheduled shows in Australia after doctors told him his vocal cords had hemorrhaged, but apparently he waited a week before confirming the cancellations of his remaining Asian tour stops.

In a message posted May 4 on the website of Japanese promoter Creativeman Productions, Smith said, “I’ve been to the doctors today and although my 4 days vocal rest has helped, I still have some serious issue with my vocal cords which need to be addressed. I am having to fly to the USA to see a specialist there and as a result need to re-schedule the shows to later this year. This is horrible for me and I’m truly very sorry that I cannot come and see you guys.”

Smith also canceled shows in the Philippines.
