Gaillard Center To Open

The most expensive municipal project in Charleston, S.C.’s 345-year history is set to open this fall.

Local media outlets report that the $142 million Gaillard Center performing arts center will be dedicated Oct. 9.

It had been scheduled to open last month, in time for the Spoleto Festival USA which gets underway next week. But the builders said there was not time to tune the performing space to allow an April opening.

The city is expected to announce in the next few days the first shows that will feature both local and national artists.

The project includes a new performance hall that will be a key venue for Spoleto. The project also includes a ballroom, banquet space, outdoor gardens and city offices.
