Eurorock Festival Theft

Belgium’s Eurorock Festival went ahead despite several thousand euros being stolen from the site office, leaving the event short of the cash needed to pay acts.

Festival organizer Rudi Donckers was reportedly so shocked at the discovery of the theft that he was rushed to hospital with suspected heart problems.

There were conflicting reports of the amount stolen, with Het Belang Van Limburg and Flanders News putting it at euro 80,000 ($89,500), while Side-Line magazine had it at euro 45,000 ($50,400).

The goth festival at Neerpelt (May 14-16), close to the Dutch border, was making a comeback after a 12-year absence.

Although The Fields Of The Nephilim and Belgian bands including Front 242, Neon Judgement, and Praga Kahn decided not to play, Peter Hook, Killing Joke, and Anathema were among those that decided to go ahead. Some acts played for nothing or did longer sets to ensure the event ran its full course.
