Johnson’s death was confirmed by his nephew to Rolling Stone, and no cause of death was reported. The Brothers Johnson got their start as Quincy Jones’ backing band but scored hits of their own with “Strawberry Letter 23” and “I’ll Be Good To You” before going their separate ways in the 1980s.

Johnson played on Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall as well as in session work with Brabra Streisand and Paul McCartney.
