Festival promoter Marek Lieberberg told Pollstar that the Red Cross and police were at the scene within two minutes and the injured – which included eight members of the crew of German band The Broilers – were immediately taken to hospital.

Lightning struck twice, first at about 1 a.m. in the backstage area and then nearly two hours later near a camping area.

Fans were then offered shelter in lightning-proof tents. The weather stole the headlines from what was a record-breaking weekend for Lieberberg.

The 30th anniversary Rock am Ring sold out its 90,000 tickets in March. The festival moved from its longtime home at the Formula 1 racing track to a military airfield in Mendig.

Sister festival Rock im Park, which takes place at the Zeppelinfeld in Nuremberg, sold out its 85,000 capacity.

The acts helping Lieberberg celebrate record ticket sales for his twinned festivals June 5-7 included Foo FightersThe ProdigyMarilyn MansonBad ReligionDie Toten HosenEagles Of Death Metal, and Slipknot.
