Texas Curfew Aimed At Fests

County commissioners in Texas are considering a curfew that could throw a wrench into any future plans to stage festivals at Carson Creek Ranch, east of Austin, a 60-acre locale that has reportedly been scouted by reps of Insomniac and C3 Presents.

Carson Creek owner Joan Havard told the Austin Business Journal the reps toured the property with the idea of possibly staging multiday festivals for 30,000 to 40,000 on the site.

C3 promoter Bobby Clay confirmed to the paper that he has toured the site but said the company has no plans for an event there. Havard told the paper that Insomniac founder Pasquale Rotella and COO Simon Rust Lamb have also scouted the property with an eye to hosting a spinoff of Electric Daisy Carnival there. Travis County commissioners invited public comment July 7 on a proposal to impose a curfew that would prevent such events from stretching past midnight, in response to noise complaints from a neighboring business, according to the Business Journal.

The ranch has already been the site of several festivals in the last year, including Euphoria, Levitation, Untapped Austin and Stargayzer fests. Havard told the Journal the uncertainty over the proposed curfew has put contract negotiations in limbo.

“I don’t have contracts for anything right now because everyone’s kind of circling to see what happens with the curfew,” she told the paper. “Normally I have Euphoria and Levitation under contract by now, but how can I negotiate if I can’t tell them how late they can run? They need to be able to book their acts by now but they can’t because I can’t fully negotiate.”

The proposed curfew would regulate not only how late an event may run, but how many acts could be booked and how much could be made through alcohol sales.
