Johnny D’s Closing

Carla DeLellis, owner of Johnny D’s Uptown Restaurant and Music Club in Somerville, tells The Boston Globe  it will close early next year.

She calls it a personal decision, not a financial one.

She plans to turn the building, which she owns, into a mixed-use facility with commercial space at street level and three stories of residential space above.

The club was founded by her parents, John and Tina in 1969. Their children took over and Carla DeLellis has run the club alone since her brother’s death.

The club has hosted up-and-coming acts from across the musical spectrum from zydeco to bluegrass, country, pop, rock, and world music.
