Johnny Dโ€™s Closing

A landmark Boston-area club known for the eclectic mix of artists that graced its stage is closing after nearly 50 years in business.

Carla DeLellis, owner of in Somerville, tells The Boston Globe  it will close early next year.

She calls it a personal decision, not a financial one.

She plans to turn the building, which she owns, into a mixed-use facility with commercial space at street level and three stories of residential space above.

The club was founded by her parents, John and Tina in 1969. Their children took over and Carla DeLellis has run the club alone since her brotherโ€™s death.

The club has hosted up-and-coming acts from across the musical spectrum from zydeco to bluegrass, country, pop, rock, and world music.
