CAA Case Against UTA Continues

A legal battle between CAA and United Talent Agency over agent and client poaching continues to wind its way through court following a recent hearing in which the judge decided against naming a trial date.

During the hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court, attorneys for UTA said the agency plans to seek a summary judgment on California’s seven-year rule, Deadline Hollywood reported.

The rule applies in the case as it states that a labor contract “may not be enforced against the employee beyond seven years from the commencement of service under it.”

Meanwhile, attorneys for CAA revealed during the hearing that depositions have been taken with CAA’s Richard Lovett, Bryan Lourd and Kevin Huvane. Sources reportedly close to the matter told Deadline David “Doc” O’Connor, who left the agency in June, is also scheduled to be deposed.

Three arbitration cases are moving forward with Jason Heyman, Martin Lesak and Nick Nuciforo, Deadline noted.

CAA claims the three still had binding contracts when they jumped ship for UTA. Two demurrer hearings regarding CAA’s initial complaint and civil proceedings regarding three former CAA agents are scheduled Dec. 11.
