The Blade, which was released July 24 via Warner Bros. Nashville, marks her third studio album. The country singer co-wrote the 13 tracks with a number of songwriters including her Pistol Annies bandmate Miranda Lambert, Vince Gill and Chris Stapleton. Gill also helped out by producing the album with Justin Niebank.

The Blade could be stronger if it was more streamlined and sequenced with some kind of overarching narrative in mind, but that’s almost beside the point when the album sounds so damn good,” Pitchfork writes in its review. “Once again Monroe worked with Vince Gill and veteran engineer Justin Niebank, and together they hint at pop directions while never abandoning classic country traditions. This is country music for headphones, intricate and inventive and endlessly detailed.”
