Kings Venue Moves Forward

Three Sacramento residents who sued the city have withdrawn their lawsuit, enabling the city to secure financing for the new downtown arena.
in Sacramento, Calif.

The plaintiffs claimed the city gave the Sacramento Kings an illegal “secret subsidy.” They gave up their two-year legal crusade April 5, two weeks after a Sacramento Superior Court judge rejected their claims.

The settlement was expected to be finalized a press time, and it clears the city to move quickly on financing its $255 million subsidy to the new Golden 1 Center.

The plaintiffs – a political activist and two retirees – claimed the true value of the city’s subsidy was tens of millions of dollars more but the judge rejected their claims.

The $507 million Golden 1 Center broke ground in October and the Kings have spent $216 million so far.
