Sound City Expanding

The Arts Council of England and the British Council approved a funding scheme that will allow Sound City, a Liverpool-based live music endeavor, to expand its business to South Korea, where it will work with Seoul’s Zandari Festival.

The festival takes place every October as a means for outside entities to enter the developing Korean music market by showcasing some of the biggest emerging talent from not only Korea but from Asia as well. An accompanying music digital business conference also takes place.

The festival’s director, Kong Yoon-young, said the partnership with Sound City “will allow us to build a wider international audience for our festival and conference.”

Apparently, Kong has been working with Sound City for the past three years, sending artists to the latter’s events in Liverpool. “We are now able to work on both sides in a wider and more strategic manner,” Kong said. The Arts Council of England said it had been looking for “new markets and audiences abroad” for its artists and cultural organizations and hoped that Sound City would provide that kind of penetration.

In addition to Liverpool, Sound City has also helped produce large-scale music festivals and conferences in Dubai, Norway and Australia, as well as a “boutique version” of its signature SoundCity event in Brooklyn.
