Carrie Brownstein Announces Book Tour

Before performing another run of dates with Sleater-Kinney in December, Carrie Brownstein is hitting the road for a book tour in support of her new memoir. The fall outing is set up as a “conversation with” a variety of guest interviewers including The Roots’ Questlove and Amy Poehler.

“Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl” is due out Oct. 27 via Riverside Books. The memoir is described as “a candid, funny, and deeply personal look at making a life – and finding yourself in music.” Readers will get insight into Sleater-Kinney’s rise to prominence during the underground feminist punk-rock movement in the 1990s, as well as the experiences that led Brownstein to co-create the satirical sketch comedy TV series “Portlandia.”

Praise for “Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl” includes an enthusiastic review from Kim Gordon, who released her own memoir earlier this year.

“Carrie has written the book everyone has been waiting for,” the former Sonic Youth vocalist/bassist/guitarist says. “It looks inside the Riot Grrrl scene in Olympia from the outside in – from a fan to the stage, and what happens when your dream becomes your nightmare. So many times while reading this book I screamed, ‘Yes!’ inside. You can feel Carrie’s visceral guitar swirling energy on every page. An amazing writer.”

The book tour begins on the East Coast in late October. Venues range from Saint Vitus bar in Brooklyn to Pasadena Presbyterian Church to Toronto Reference Library.

Additional special guests include writer/editor Dave Eggers, actress/comedian/“SNL” cast member Aidy Bryant, novelist/screenwriter Maria Semple, Pitchfork Senior Editor Jessica Hopper, freelance journalist / The Globe and Mail columnist Johanna Schneller, and hotelier / Sound By San Jose festival founder Liz Lambert.
