Ailing: Lemmy Kilmister, Snoop Dogg
After Motörhead performed just a few songs Tuesday night at Austin’s Emo, Kilmister told the audience, “I can’t do it.” The band left the stage and then Kilmister came back to apologize, looking “genuinely pained to not play,” according to Austin360.com.
American-Statesman contributor Andy O’Connor writes, “From the moment Motorhead began playing ‘Damage Case’ … the prognosis wasn’t looking good. While guitarist Phil Campbell and drummer Mikkey Dee were plenty animated, Lemmy’s usually imposing posture looked stiff and uncomfortable. His trademark hoarse voice sounded less natural, a rare sign of struggle in a seemingly invincible figure.”
Last week the band cut its Aug. 27 show at Salt Lake City short and canceled its Aug. 28 appearance at Denver’s Riot Fest, saying the high altitude “made it hard for him to breathe and sing properly.” Motörhead announced Wednesday morning that tonight’s show at The Aztec Theater in San Antonio was being nixed.
“As you might have heard, Motörhead again had to abbreviate a performance due to Lemmy not feeling well,” Motörhead posted on Facebook Sept. 2. “This is a DIRECT follow-on from the altitude issues in Colorado, and clearly, Lemmy tried to get back at it too quickly. For this reason, Motörhead will not play in San Antonio tonight, but the show will still go on with Saxon headlining. Lemmy will resume duties the moment he is PROPERLY rested and firing on all cylinders again. The legendary Motörheadbanger patience is much appreciated, and the band send their deepest thanks. More details will be released soon.”
Kilmister’s health concerns have affected the band’s tour schedule for the past few years. In early 2014 Motörhead called off its European tour because Kilmister was dealing with “issues relating to diabetes.” The tour has already been postponed from fall 2013 because the frontman needed time to work his “way back to full fitness and rude health.”
Snoop Dogg isn’t feeling well enough to take the stage tonight either. His management contacted the New York State Fair Tuesday afternoon, saying he was ill.
Luckily, Nas was available to take his place.
“We are so fortunate to be able to secure an artist of Nas’s stature on such short notice,” Acting Fair Director Troy Waffner said Tuesday evening, according to Syracuse.com. “His record as a performer speaks for itself and tomorrow night he’ll put on what I know will be one of the most interesting shows of the 2015 Fair.”
Wednesday’s event in Syracuse, N.Y., also features Salt-N-Pepa.
