Hatsune Miku Announces North America Outing

She’s opened for Lady Gaga and appeared on the “Late Show With David Letterman.” And now, Japan’s favorite virtual singing sensation is headed back to North America for a spring tour. A Facebook post from Hatsune Miku promises she’s “coming back bigger and better!!!”

The 16-year-old isn’t any ol’ hologram. In fact, as NBC News points out, Miku is actually a vocaloid, “a more general term that describes personalities built around specific voice samples.”

Miku comes to life on stage thanks to a computer-generated voice and 3D graphics, “with a repertoire entirely provided by individual creators,” according to MikuExpo.com. Her website boasts that “she is the first truly crowd-created virtual talent.”

As Letterman put it, watching one of her performances is “like being on Willie Nelson’s bus.”

In addition to shows in Seattle, Los Angeles, Dallas, Toronto and New York, one more city will be announced. Here’s how the schedule stands today:

April 23 – Seattle, Wash., WaMu Theater
April 30 – San Francisco, Calif., Warfield Theatre
