Officials with  in Portsmouth, N.H., will partner with the city to split the estimated $800,000 cost for upgrades to the surrounding area.

Music Hall officials say the project would improve unsafe sidewalks, accessibility and visibility. The proposal calls for constructing an illuminated arch and a new, level paving pattern around the theater’s entrance along with more seating areas, trees and greenery.

The Music Hall is also expected to renovate the theater’s exterior, including the trim, windows and the damaged marquee. The City Council voted to move the proposal forward to the city’s cultural commission to authorize a project review.
