MGM Bids On Arena Contract
The 8,000-capacity arena is currently operated by Spectra, but in the proposed agreement MGM would manage the day-to-day affairs of the venue, with Spectra continuing to handle food and beverage services.
The proposed contract would last five years and allow a six-month transition period where many of Spectra’s current responsibilities in managing the facility would be handed off to MGM. Tina D’Agostino of Springfield’s Symphony Hall and CityStage told Springfield’s The Republican she felt the signing would be good for all businesses in the area.
“I think it is exciting. It’s good news for Springfield. Clearly MGM is an entertainment giant who can bring in the big acts,” D’Agostino said. “A vibrant MassMutual Center means more people downtown and increased business for its neighbors. As they say, ‘The rising tide lifts all boats.'”
The MassMutual Center is a block away from the site where MGM’s casino is being constructed. The casino is to open in 2018.
