Australia’s BIGSOUND Back For 15th Year

Australia’s BIGSOUND, the southern hemisphere’s biggest new music festival and music industry conference, returns to Brisbane for its 15th year Sept. 7-9.

Thousands of bands will apply to be among the 150 acts chosen to showcase in 15 venues in the city’s Fortitude Valley entertainment precinct before international and local delegates including artist managers, bookers, promoters, festival organisers and A&R execs.

Among the Australia and New Zealand acts who kickstarted global careers at the event are Courtney Barnett, The Temper Trap, Flume, Rufus, DMAs, Boy & Bear, Kimbra, The Jezabels, The Naked & Famous, Gang of Youths, DZ Deathrays, Ball Park Music and San Cisco.

The latest is Perth trio Methyl Ethel, whose performance last year got garnered booking deals in Australia, the U.S. and the UK and a worldwide record deal with England’s 4AD. “2016 is a turning point in BIGSOUND’s history,” said the confab’s executive producer, Joel Edmondson. “Although we’re focused on adding new dimensions to the BIGSOUND experience, it’s also important that we look back on our roots and celebrate just how far we’ve come. The BIGSOUND alumni list is a who’s who of Australian music. That BIGSOUND is a place where a public audience can share in the birth of those careers is something truly unique and special.”

This year, artist manager and broadcaster Maggie Collins joins the event as new co-programmer.
