Jail Time For Jazz Theft
A New York man will spend up to three years in prison for stealing nearly $500,000 in prize money that had been awarded to jazz composer and pianist Cecil Taylor.
Noel Muir, of Uniondale, pleaded guilty to grand larceny and was sentenced for stealing Taylor’s awarded prize money from the 2013 Kyoto Award.
Prosecutors say that Muir befriended Taylor while working as a general contractor near the musician’s residence. Muir accompanied Taylor to Japan to help with arrangements for the award money, and did so by having the funds sent to his own account. Muir has returned $200,000 to the victim.
