The Posies’ Solid States Secret Shows

This is one secret that you’ll want in on. Beloved alt pop group The Posies just announced dates for a “secret” U.S. tour to go along with its first new studio album in six years.

While some bands’ gigs are referred to as secret shows, even though the dates and locations are broadcast to the whole world ahead of time, the members of The Posies know how to keep their lips sealed. The venues on the “Solid States Secret Shows” tour – described as “unconventional spaces” – will only be revealed to ticketholders.

The tour takes its name from the band’s upcoming LP, Solid States, due out May 20 via MyMusicEmpire.

Jon Auer calls the release “our most adventurous record to date.”

Fellow singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Ken Stringfellow explains, “So many things have changed, either by choice or by circumstance, in the six years between this album and the one before it. We’ve had two bandmates die, a divorce and remarriage, a transoceanic move … There’s been good things and difficult things, but nothing is in the same place for us. So it makes sense that this record would sound different from its predecessors.”

Stringfellow adds, “We definitely chose to make an album where the guitar was less in front and more of just another tone generator in a field of diverse sounds. “The title Solid States refers ironically to the shattering of our stylistic habits and personal lives in the years between this album and the one before it. We decided that the songs would be written with electronic rhythms in place, and we’d add real drums to give it variety, but only after everything else was done.”

Auer and Stringfellow recorded the album with drummer Frankie Siragusa, former Flaming Lips drummer Kliph Scurlock and singer Gizelle Smith. Auer’s wife, Tiz Aramini, and Stringfellow’s daughter Aden also contributed. Siragusa is currently touring with The Posies.

The “Solid States Secret Shows” excursion launches somewhere in Van Nuys, Calif., April 28. After heading to the East Coast, the band makes its way back towards the Pacific Ocean. The last stop is Oakland May 29.
