The University of South Dakota’s $66 million new arena project in Vermillion, pictured in an artist’s rendering, is expected to break ground May 12 and feature 6,000 seats.

Sanford Health secured the naming rights to the facility with a $20 million donation that launched the development of the arena, a science, health and research lab, and an outdoor track and soccer complex in 2012.

Sanford Health has served as the sports medicine provider for the university since 2005.

The 6,000-seat arena for basketball and volleyball is scheduled to open for the 2016-17 academic year.
