Midnight Oil Burning Bright

Midnight Oil hasn’t toured since 2002 but 2017 will prove to be a different story as the band makes plans to reunite and tour their Australian homeland and overseas.

The good news came from the band’s website.

We know it’s been a while but we wanted to tell you that the five of us are finally making plans to get together again for some gigs next year. We’re looking forward to hopefully playing overseas and touring our homeland for the first time since 2002.

We won’t know exactly when, where and what we’ll be doing before next January at the earliest so in the meantime please just ignore any rumours. Unless and until you hear about something from us you can safely assume that it’s not yet confirmed.

The band’s legacy has been portrayed at numerous events. Last year was filled with memorabilia happenings such as “The Making of Midnight Oil” free exhibition, which ended in February 2016, at Arts Centre Melbourne featuring every kind of band paraphernalia you can think of minus the illegal ones.

Another “The Making of Midnight Oil” (not free) exhibition was featured at Newcastle Museum last spring and followed the group’s cultural and social impact over a 40 year time span. On top of that the individual members have had a variety of solo and collaborating projects.

Frontman Peter Garrett wrote his memoir, “Big Blue Sky,” which overflowed into plans for a solo album. Drummer/songwriter Rob Hirst has been working with The Backsliders, Sean Sennett, and Jay and Mark O’Shea. Guitarist/producer/composer Jim Mogine has his plate full with the Electric Guitar Orchestra, Australian Chambers Orchestra, The Tinkers and Shameless Seamus. Guitarist Martin Rotsey kept it close to home working with Hirst and Mogine as The Break and played on Garrett’s new album. Bassist Bones Hillman relocated to the U.S. in 2007 to get in on the live scene and join forces with Matthew Good and Oil’s producer Warne Livesey.

Pollstar will keep you updated with tour dates as they are unveiled. In the meantime visit MidnightOil.com.
