Arena Vote Results In Sexist Threats

Seattle has been in a twist ever since the Supersonics relocated to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder in 2008. That’s a long time to hold a grudge and apparently the misdirected hostility is aimed at the city council who voted against a new sports arena for a potential NBA team in the city.

The $550 million plan was voted against in a 5-4 decision, along gender lines, and reflected the sentiment of 77 percent of registered voters, according to the polls, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Hundreds of social media posts and email messages threatened the women who voted against the proposal, according to the New York Times.

The threats include vulgarity and suggestions that the women “should all kill themselves” and “rot in hell.” But that’s not all: they were accused of “whoring” themselves out to the highest bidder and, as women, spend a lot of time “trying to please others.” “While we may not agree with the Council’s vote, misogynistic insults, vile comments, and threats are unacceptable and need to stop,” said developer Chris Hansen.

The paper reported that financial arguments persuaded the council’s vote and without a promised team for the city, they concluded it wasn’t the best use of city resources and “that another location, already owned by the city should be considered.”
