A Theatre Reborn In Brooklyn

The long-awaited renovation of the 2,800-capacity Brooklyn Paramount in Brooklyn, N.Y., appears to have cleared its last hurdle with the signing of a long-term lease agreement between Paramount Events Center and Long Island University.

Paramount Events Center includes Onexim Sports and Entertainment, developer Bruce Ratner, and Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment CEO Brett Yormark – the team behind  and the new .

Construction on what will be called LIU Brooklyn Paramount Theatre is expected to begin next year with a projected opening in 2019. The lease is for a reported 49 years, but financial details were not released. PEC will oversee booking for an estimated 120 events and provide employment opportunities and internships for LIU students to gain hands-on experience in music industry disciplines including arts management, media arts, performing arts and marketing.

“The University is proud to move forward with the LIU Brooklyn Paramount Theatre’s renovation, LIU President Dr. Kimberly Cline said. “LIU is a destination for the arts and the restoration of this iconic New York landmark will create transformational, high-impact educational and career opportunities for our students.”

Brooklyn Paramount operated from 1928-62 as a live performance venue and was the first theatre in the world designated to present “talkies,” according to a statement from the university.

Among performers appearing at the venue over the years were Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Bing Crosby, Buddy Holly, and Chuck Berry. After its 1962 closing, the theatre became part of the LIU campus, where it is in use as a multipurpose space for students, staff and guests.
