Philips Arena Upgrade Discussed

Atlanta Hawks CEO Steve Koonin says it’s hard for the team to impress its fan base in a venue that’s 17 years old and obsolete, so it’s time to do something about it.

, originally designed for hockey, is said to be in need of a technology update, among other improvements, according to WSB-TV. Koonin said there are no plans to move out of the arena.

Instead, talks are on track for a multimillion-dollar renovation that could start as soon as the summer of 2017.

“Right now, it’s virtually impossible to walk around Philips Arena in concentric circles because we have bridges and up and elevators and stairs,” Koonin told the station. “We want to create flow and circulation. We want to have an open bowl so if you’re up at the concession stand getting a beer, you can still watch the game.”

Philips Arena is owned by the Atlanta-Fulton County Recreation Authority. Hawks officials have been in talks with Mayor Kasim Reed and his staff for months to create a plan for the arena and the surrounding business district. The goal is to make the venue state-of-the-art and more inclusive for all fans, WSB-TV said.
