Don’t Lock People Inside

The city of Myrtle Beach, S.C., is mulling over an ordinance that would change nightclubs’ closing times and entrance regulations.

The proposed ordinance would require clubs and bars to turn the lights off between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. and would prohibit nightspots from locking front doors while patrons are in a venue.

The latter element comes after police were recently prevented from entering a nightclub because of the locked doors. Horry County Council unanimously approved an ordinance May 17 requiring bars to close at 2 a.m., although that ordinance will require two more votes before coming into effect. South Carolina pulled $19 billion in tourism in 2014 according to the U.S. Travel Association, supporting one in 10 of the state’s jobs.
