ABBA Reunites On Stage
The reunion took place Sunday evening at Stockholm’s Berns Salonger during a private party celebrating a big milestone for the group, according to Swden’s Expressen. As ABBA’s official Facebook page points out, “June 5th is exactly 50 years since Björn and Benny met for the first time in Linköping, Sweden. The rest is history and we are all so grateful for this day.”
Fans have been keeping their fingers crossed for an ABBA reunion for years and years. While nobody is saying anything about a tour, this is a big deal in the ABBA world.
The Swedish pop group, known for hits in the ‘70s and early ‘80s like “Dancing Queen,” “Take A Chance On Me” and “The Winner Takes It All,” last performed in public on a British TV show in 1982. Four years later a Swedish TV show aired a recording the four members had made of the group performing an acoustic version of “Tivedshambo.”
This time around ABBA showed off the song “Me and I,” which is included on the 1980 album Super Trouper. According to Expressen, Fältskog and Lyngstad started singing the tune in honor of Ulvaeus and Andersson, and the guys chimed in towards the end.
As Swedish songwriter/guitarist Janne Schaffer, who was in attendance at the party, told the publication, “We witnessed a piece of music history tonight.”
ABBA made headlines in January when the four members of the group appeared at the opening night of Ulvaeus’ Stockholm restaurant called Mama Mia! The Party. The Mediterranean restaurant was inspired by the “Mamma Mia!” musical, which is set in Greece and features ABBA’s songs. The Associated Press noted in its write-up that although ABBA members were all in attendance, they “did not sing or pose for photos together and rejected suggestions they would ever perform together again.”
