Memphis Legend Moman Dies
Lincoln “Chips” Moman, veteran songwriter and producer, died in LaGrange, Ga., June 13 the day after he turned 79.
Moman was instrumental in the rise of Memphis’s famed Stax records, producing a number of the company’s early singles and assisting in its transition into an R&B label.
He is considered the one man, other than Sam Phillips, to capture Elvis Presley’s talent on tape, assisting the King’s famous return in 1969. He also wrote some of the most famous songs in R&B and country music like “Dark End of the Street” and “Luckenbach Texas (Back to the Basics of Love).”
He then founded American Sound Studios, where he and his house band helped record hits for Presley, Dusty Springfield, Neil Diamond and B.J. Thomas.
