Houston And Hofheinz Settle Dispute

A legal dispute over naming rights of the University of Houston’s basketball arena have been settled between the Hofheinz family and school, which is renovating the facility next year.

The arena was named after Roy Hofheinz, former judge and Houston mayor, who put $1.5 million towards the construction of the facility in 1969.

School officials wanted to take Hofheinz’s name off and negotiate a new naming rights deal as part of the funding toward the arena’s $60 million renovation. The Hofheinz family disputed the change and ultimately came to an agreement with the university.

The school will ask the city to change the street along the new arena to Hofheinz and will build a plaza for a bronze statue of the former Houston Astros owner.

The Houston Chronicle reported the new venue will house a 7,420-capacity and be selling naming rights for $20 million. Hofheinz died in 1982.
